Recent medical research and advice seems to be against stretching before running. It appears that this actually can harm the muscles and tendons and does not prepare them for the exercise to follow. See: http://www.newsmedical.net/?id=5055

However a full range of stretching AFTER the exercise or race is most beneficial now that the muscle groups are loose, flexible and warmed up. Try the links here to explore many stretching routines on various websites or CLICK HERE for eight beneficial stretches for runners.

Before training or racing it is necessary to warm-up adequately by doing slow gentle repetitions of the exercise to follow. For runners this means gentle jogging, progressing into knee-lifts, hopping and bounding in various directions. This fully warms up the muscle groups and provides flexibility for the joints.
