Adventure racing is a combination of two or more disciplines, including orienteering
and navigation, cross-country running, mountain biking, paddling and climbing and
related rope skills. An expedition event can span ten days or more while sprints
can be completed in a matter of hours. There is typically no dark period during races,
irrespective of length; competitors must choose if or when to rest.
We have a former ACE race series winner running with us and others are now having
a go too.
After many years of road running several members started looking for more challenging
events. Races requiring greater distances, strength or toughness and team work were
attempted and ‘enjoyed’.
Welsh Castles - 2 days / 200 miles, Caernarfon to Cardiff.
Tough Guy - A winter X-country and assault course. Not for the fainthearted.
Tough Team - 9 miles road and off-road. Includes the infamous ‘Railway’!!
Cotswolds Way Relay - 105 miles / 10 legs all off-road
One of our members will be doing his 2nd Marathon des Sables (6 days across the Sahara)
next year. None of us are brave (mad) enough to have a go - yet.
We also organise our own tough race - The TuffNutz
A triathlon is an athletic event consisting of swimming, cycling and running over
various distances. In most modern triathlons, these events are placed back-to-back
in immediate sequence and a competitor's official time includes the time required
to "transition" between the individual legs of the race, including any time necessary
for changing clothes and shoes. As a result, proficiency in swimming, cycling, and
running alone is not sufficient to guarantee a triathlete a competitive time: trained
triathletes have learned to race each stage in a way that preserves their energy
and endurance for subsequent stages.
One of our members has been a member of the Great Britain Age-related Team for several
years. Other members have enjoyed triathlons too.
