Birchwood Brings the Cross-Country Season to a Close

Sunday 22nd February saw the final race in the North West Sunday Cross-Country League and also the final race in our own internal cross-country league. The race was also the first race in the Pensby Supercup Series.
A total of 17 men and 6 ladies competed over 5 miles of glorious mud and grass. The course delivered plenty of deep sticky mud but less standing water than in previous years. Four laps also ensured that no one could get lost! Five men were making their first appearance on the country this season, namely Ian Shorrock, John Suckley, Mark Roberts, Nigel Crompton and Andy Morley. First home for the men was Ralph Pawling, ably supported by Simon Rogers and Gary Thornton-Allen, all finishing in the first 30. Sarah Roberts finished in her best position of the season, 2nd overall, with Lisa Grantham and Debbie Rutherford making the other team counters. Only Ian Shorrock finished between Gary Thornton-Allen and Dom Roberts, which ensured that Dom finished top of the final Pensby League Table for the men. Sarah Roberts comfortably won the title for the ladies but consistent performances by the other ladies ensured that Anne Rosbottom, Carole Morrison and Debbie Rutherford all tied for second place.
In the North West Sunday League the men finished a creditable 8th overall and the ladies a magnificent 2nd. The final results are still to be published on the Steve Saunders website.
A big thank you to the 30 men and 13 ladies who ran in at least one of the league races this season. I hope you all enjoyed the experience and that you will be coming back for more next season. We may even make the English National next year!
